HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHENNAI:
August 22 is celebrated as
Madras Day to commemorate the founding of city of Madras now chennai.It was on this day in 1639 that a small piece of land where Fort St George stands today was transacted by British East India Company and this year it is celebrating its 368th Birthday.
The celebrations include several events organised including citizens and students and lasts for a week.

Significance of 22 August:

It was on 22 August 1639 that a sliver of land, where now stands Fort St George, was handed over by the local Nayak rulers to the East India Company’s Francis Day, his dubash Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan. From this small three square miles given to the East India Company grew the city of Chennai where more than four and a half million people live now.

2010 celebrations:

*Chennai celebrated its birthday in style last week.From educational institutions to clubs to galleries, ‘Madras Week' celebrations even on the corporate campuses wore a colourful look. *While some companies were recreating the Onam festivities before employees left for the weekend, a few organised events to celebrate the city's birthday.
*Apart from kolam, a tagline contest and a photography exhibition, a typical tea stall-like set-up was recreated on the Infosys campus by the Voice of Youth team that served filter coffee and ‘vazhai elai virunthu'.
*Pictures speak a thousand words and the exhibition of photographs and design by students of different colleges at Anna University was a reminder of that.

Historian S. Muthiah, who participated in the event, recalled the splendour the city that had ‘the beginnings of the modern world'. A panel discussion that followed the event had architects highlighting the need to develop a creative form of urban art, which would “recapture lost public spaces” and prevent the danger of “monotonous neighbourhoods of booming cities
